Michael F. Coyle-Artist's Statement

Michael F. Coyle received his artistic training at Atelier Lack (1980-84), a traditional private school for the training of painters where he studied with Richard Lack, Stephen Gjertson, and Don Koestner.  Michael paints portraits, still lifes, and figurative works.  An enthusiastic landscape painter, he also enjoys the challenge of painting the variety of nature’s moods and seasons.  He has also been developing outdoor figurative pieces which combines his interest of landscape and figure painting.  Intrigued by the possibilities of imaginative painting, Michael has been working on a series of paintings and sculptures in an inventive mode.

His work is in numerous private collections and he has been in a number of individual and group shows.  In addition to the sale of his original works, he also does commissioned pieces: portraits, landscapes, still lifes and figurative pieces.  Michael has also exhibited frequently with the Classical Realist group and also worked with Richard Lack and Gary Christianson during the formative stages of the American Society of Classical Realism.

In addition to painting in the studio and on location, Michael has taught at several private art schools in the tradition of Classical Realism since 1985 including Atelier LeSueur and Atelier Lack.  Michael is currently the director of Coyle Studio of Fine Art at the Wilcock Gallery in Excelsior, MN. The experience and relationships he forms through his contacts with teaching has enhanced his artistic development. Michael and an associate, Annette LeSueur, co-authored the book “Don Koestner, American Impressionist”, which was published in 2005.
