Artist's Statement-Jean Merrill McKibben

I have developed my unique wire, metal, and rock wall sculptures through a lifetime of artistic and creative work. My technique and desire to communicate visually has evolved into my original interpretations of animals, plants, people, and landscapes. Wire and metal can be formed into endless possibilities, providing me the opportunity to develop new forms, designs, textures, and colors, as I continue to mature as an artist.

While others create metal sculpture or wall art using welding, soldering, or other fabricating methods, my techniques are exclusive to my pieces. I create my pieces by knotting pieces of wire together to build a multi-level structure. I prepare metal pieces (brass, copper, or aluminum) by applying paint, a patina, and/or textures. Metal pieces are then attached with tabs to the various shapes and levels of the structure. Sometimes I incorporate rock, colored glass, or other natural materials in the design. Because of the materials and technique, my work can be displayed both indoors and outdoors.

My artistic life began at an early age, attending an experimental school at St. Cloud State University. Classes in drawing, sculpture, and jewelry at St. Cloud State University, St. John’s University, and College of St. Benedict helped me grow artistically and creatively. In addition to wall sculpture, I also carve in stone (primarily marble and alabaster) and wood (walnut). Mobiles and lamp shades are other expressions of my artistry. You can view a comprehensive showing of my work on this web site.

In addition to selling to the general public, I accept commissions, designing and creating pieces for individual customers. Most of my pieces are “one of a kind” or variations of a design. My work hangs in public buildings and private homes as well as being displayed in outdoor landscapes.

As I keep exploring the potential of my unique technique, I plan to continue communicating artistically and visually with form, shape, and color.
